Report Cards

Report cards went home today.  We had a class meeting to review how the students are assessed in the classroom. Please email us if you would like to schedule a private meeting to set goals for your child.  Grade 5-6 is a pivotal time for our students.  Students have been setting goals in class to improve their learning and using rubrics to clearly understand the expectations of assignments.  At times, formal homework is given and is highlighted on this blog.  Other times, students are asked to complete a task that was unfinished in class time.  We provide extra time for those who require it and help and support when a student needs assistance.  Room 22 is also learning how to plan, review rubrics, edit, revise, study and take multiple choice tests and/or complete other types of assessments. We had many mystery assignments turned in with no names attached, and students did not claim them afterwards.  For students striving for 3's and 4's, we have discussed during class meetings, that it is necessary for them to clearly explain their thinking, add details, and reflect critically on the text and/or topic being covered in class.

LA

This week in LA we continued learning about non-fiction texts. We also learned about the importance of adding interesting details, in order to ensure our readers our interested in our writing. We also began researching a country that is part of our heritage.

Our spelling words for our test on Monday are:

Xylophone
Slight
Glimpse
Quietly
Describe
Blind
Scientific
Buyer
Distinct
Acquire

Math

We have continued working with both basic division facts and long division. We have also started working through word problems.

Social Studies

We have continued our investigation into dictatorship through the country we created in class called Alpha 22. We learned how important democracy is and why we need a process to determine new laws and rules.  We looked closely at one of the four pillars of Democracy- Equity and described what fairness means to us.  A question we asked was how are equity and fairness related?  Does equity mean fair?

French

This week in French we are working on la maison (a house), as well as its associated vocabulary.  Please find a link to the worksheets we completed, as well as powerpoints to listen to the correct pronunciation and review the words.  We plan to build model houses in the next few weeks and combine our learning with science, as we will be adding some electrical circuitry to our models.

Please collect the following items at home:
  • cardboard (all sizes)
  • lids from milk or small bottles
  • tiny plastic containers
  • pieces of fabric (for making curtains, bedding etc.)
  • artificial plants or flowers
  • mini plastic animals

Note: to listen to the voice on the powerpoints you must download them to the computer

Students may also practice French using the app called Duolingo for daily practice.
