March 18-22

This week we learned to braaaaaggggg about our work.  This is an important skill to work on because sometimes we focus on the things we still have to learn or mistakes we have made.  We are trying to use a growth mindset, celebrate what we do well and make goals to help us improve. Thank you for coming to conferences and viewing our learning! Here are our up-dates for the week.

LA
This week in LA we began our new novel Pax! We started our unit by writing brief predictions about what the novel might be about, including the problem of the story. We also continued making Art Marks with a brief synopsis of the chapter. I am so proud of the students who handed in their Bridge to Terabithia final project. The level of detail, imagination, and description was impressive.

Math
This week in math we continued working on our Disneyland project to practice adding, subtracting, and multiplying decimals! I am enjoying seeing all of the creative ideas on how to spend money! For example, Danat is planning on going indoor skydiving!

Science
In science this week we continued to learn about electricity and magnetism through a rotation of centres.  We have been creating simple circuits, series circuits, parallel circuits, adding switches, buzzers and lights.  Exploring the impact of magnetism on compasses and on electricity, and talking about conductors, insulators and liquids that conduct electricity.  We are also learning about electrical diagrams.

Can you draw the schematic for the above illustration?

French
We finished putting together our French houses.  After spring break we will be adding lighting, door bells, and/or a burglar alarm.

Challenges for Spring Break

  • Practice French on Duolingo Duolingo
  • Watch TV or Movies in French
  • Practice basic math facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division)
  • Teach your parents/siblings a math game, solve some puzzles on this website Solveme
  • Keep a journal over the break and write, write, write
  • Read a new book and visit the library
  • Non-fiction topics you could read about include: Electricity, Flight, Aerodynamics, Crime Scene Investigation, Trees, Forests, Animals, Space and the Sky

LA
We are almost done our final project for Bridge to Terabithia! I am so proud of the work done so far by everyone! I can't wait for the students to share their hard work with you at conferences next week. We will have one more day in class (Monday) to work on our "matchbook" summaries and connection write-ups. If they are not done Monday, they will be homework and due on Thursday March 21.

Our next spelling test is on Monday March 18. Here are the spelling words:
1. anxious
2. consequence
3. famous
4. luminous
5. situation
6. inhale
7. standard
8. element
9. disease
10. demolish

Reminder: Some of us have not handed in our nonfiction descriptive writing piece. Please do so as soon as possible

Math
This week in math we have started our decimal and fractions unit. We began correctly naming decimals, e.g. 0.42 is 42 hundredths. We also converted decimals into fractions! We also began our next math project. We are planning a trip to Disneyland. Each student has a budget of $3000 for each member of their family. It is our job to plan for flights, ground transportation, hotel, food, park passes, and anything extra we think of!
Students can also use prodigy.com to work on their math skills

French
In French this week, we worked diligently to design, create and continue construction on our houses.  Students were asked to decorate and create the furniture for their houses at home and return it to school on Monday.  We will begin adding electrical components to our homes soon.  Students also created labels for their houses to demonstrate their understanding of the French vocabulary.  Students can continue to build vocabulary and pronunciation skills on www.duolingo.com

Science
In science, we began our electricity and magnetism centres.  Students are working in groups of three to complete challenges.  We had quite a few light bulbs going off on Thursday and some of us realized that we needed to review our vocabulary notes and/or prior learning on conductors and insulators.  Several groups created various circuits and added in a switch to turn the power on and off, a resistor to lessen the flow of electricity, or a buzzer to experiment with sound.  It was fun!

Spaceport Field Trip

We are looking for parent volunteers for our Spaceport Field Trip on April 16! Please contact Mrs. Pierce or Miss Drever if you are able to help us out.

Why are you learning about it?
How will you explain your thinking?
How will you know you learned it?
How does it connect to prior or upcoming learning?
What are your next steps?

March 4 - 8

LA

We have almost completed our nonfiction writing! We have also continued working on our culminating activity for the novel Bridge to Terabithia. Our redesigned novel covers are almost finished. We have also started a matchbook writing activity to summarize the important events in the beginning, middle, and end of the novel. We are also going to be writing about how the important events in the story related to our personal lives. Next week, we will be starting our story writing unit.

Math

This week we finished our short unit on integers. I am so proud of each and every student! Everyone did so well on our test! We also played a challenging game called Skyscrapers! I want to congratulate Samuel, Danat, Rizwan, and Amitoj for working so well in a group and for not giving up on a tricky task. Next week we will be starting our next unit on decimals and fractions.

Here's another tricky problem for you.
Noah Problem

Social Studies

In social this week, we dove deeper into the rights and responsibilities of Canadian Citizens.  We looked at the immigration guide and tried to answer the questions on the fill in a blank activity.  Test yourself to see if you can answer the questions.

French

In French we built, built, built ma maison.  Today we created labels for each room and the objects in each room.  See Ma Maison Vocabuaire to continue practicing.

Spaceport Field Trip

We are looking for parent volunteers for our Spaceport Field Trip on April 16! Please contact Mrs. Pierce or Miss Drever if you are able to help us out.

A Visit from H.D. Cartwright

On Thursday, Grade 6's had a presentation from H.D. Cartwright to learn all about junior high.  They talked to us about transit, clubs, different options, and the athletics programs. At the open house, they set up stations that we got to rotate through. There were some really neat activities.
