We had a great week in Room 22! TSN started today. We also
have a science test on Monday, covering our Electricity and Magnetism unit. Our
first PAT is on Wednesday!!
Math
This week in math, we continued our work with fractions and
decimals. The grade 6s learned how to convert improper fractions to mixed
numbers, and vice versa. They also learned how to convert fractions to
decimals. The grade 5s continue working on adding/subtracting decimals and
identifying equivalent fractions. Some students did not finish their test on Thursday,
so there will be extra time provided on Monday for those students to finish.
LA
This week in LA, we focused on newspaper writing. Some important
things to remember for newspaper writing are:
-
Only use facts; no opinions
-
The headline should catch reader’s attention and
sum up the article
-
Only use quotes, do not say “John exclaimed”
We will continue working on article writing next week. The grade
6 writing PAT is Wednesday! During this time, the grade 5s will also be writing
a story
Social Studies
This week, we took a closer look at democracy in ancient
Athens. We also compared ancient Athens democracy to Canadian democracy. Ask me
about the differences between the two!
On Friday, we had a great discussion and opportunity to journal
our thoughts/feelings on whether or not the government should be allowed to
make decisions for citizens. This conversation was brought up because of the
Alberta School wide walkout. Room 22 and 14 had great discussions on this event
Science
For the next step in our Flight unit, the students are
completing the egg drop challenge. They will have to design and create a parachute
that will protect a hardboiled egg from breaking from a 10-foot drop.
We also looked at the parts of an airplane and how the
forces of air allow the airplane to take flight. We also examined birds,
including their feathers and wings.
