Jan. 8-11th

This week we were sad to learn that Mr. Kinsman had fallen over winter break and broke his leg in three places.  We made cards to cheer him up and Mrs. Pierce is delivering them.  We would like to welcome Miss Paige Drever to our classroom.  She is very excited to join our team and room 22 is very lucky to gain such an empathetic, kind and hard working teacher in our space.  If you need to contact Miss Drever, please email her at pldrever@cbe.ab.ca

Learning Intentions this week:
Language Arts: I can use a Think Mark to reflect on my reading and explain my thinking
Math: I can explain how subtraction is related to division.
Science:  I can connect electrical inventions to the real world.  I can create a circuit that makes an object work.  I can name the parts of a circuit.
French:  I can name some winter sports in French.

Language Arts

This week we continued reading Harry Potter and started a new way to reflect on reading called, Think Marks.  This method of reflection allowed us to experiment with showing our understanding of a book using visual sketches and writing,  We also wrote letters to Mr. Kinsman.

Math

In math, we started division this week.  We related division to subtraction and practiced using manipulatives to make groups. A great way to increase speed in division is to practice multiplication facts.

Check out this site for lots of great math games:

Science

We learned about some influential people who impacted electricity. These are the five inventors we discussed:
1. Alessandro Volta
2. Alexander Graham Bell
3. Thomas Edison
4. Benjamin Franklin
5. Nikola Tesla

We explored Snap Circuits and learned how to make a circuit.

What do you have to have for an Electrical Circuit? 1. Energy Source 2. Conducting path 3. Load (Resistance) 4. Switch (not needed, but usually present)

ART

We have been working on Op art . Op art is short for 'optical art'. The word optical is used to describe things that relate to how we see. Have you seen an optical illusion before? Op art works in a similar way. Artists use shapes, colours and patterns in special ways to create images that look as if they are moving or blurring. Op art started in the 1960s.  Here's the link to the video we watched: Op-Art Video

Buddies

We explored ourselves as learners by looking at the report card.  We talked about words such as persistence, diversity, respect, goal setting, and confidence. We self-assessed by answering questions such as:
  1. What are my strengths as a learner?
  2. How am I a good friend?
  3. How do I work within in a group?
  4. What goals do I have for the next term?
Next we interviewed our little buddies about their learning. Ask me about my strengths and areas of growth.

TSN

We will be starting next week. Ask me what I picked for my top 4 choices.
